Sitecore CMS 6 - Error 27506 during installation

Error 27506.Error executing SQL script attach. Line 5. Directory lookup for the file "D:\websites\instance name\Databases\\Sitecore.Core.MDF" failed with the operating system error 3(error not found). (5133)

The Sitecore installation wizard kept failing at the Executing SQL Install Script step when installing to a remote database. Running the install from the database server avoided the issue.

I've also seen the error appear as:

Error -2147217900: failed to execute SQL string, error detail: Directory lookup for the file "D:\websites\instance name\Databases\MDF\...\Sitecore.Core.ldf') FOR ATTACH"

  1. The "operating system error 3" means "cannot find the path specified". This means that the target path the installation tries to use to attach DBs doesn't exist on your machine.

This can happen if you specified a remote SQL server during the installation process. The databases can't be attached to a remote server. You can either specify a local SQL server, or choose "Client Only" option to install to your workstation, and later use Database installer on a DB server and install the databases only there.

The installation guide has more details on this.
    Hope this helps.

  2. Thanks for clarifying what's happening. Reading the manual is always good advice. For others looking for the right place, see section 4.1 of the install guide
